New Poll: That V.C. Andrews reference down below sent me on a total nostalgia trip. Did you ever read any of her books? Would you admit to it? Go vote and then read the rest of this post.

Okay, in case you’re wondering, V.C. Andrews wrote all these weird melodramatic serial novels generally about young women in incestuous circumstances. They were really popular in the 80’s, I swear. In junior high my group of girlfriends used to pass copies of them around until they were ragged. Apparently they’re such a publishing cash cow that even though the author died, her family have continued to publish new books under her name. They’ve all got lurid covers with a blond waif peeking out of a cutout on the front. No, I’m not proud of knowing this.

  1. ok. i had to go for “kristy swanson has sex w/ her brother,” cause i think i only read one v.c. andrews book – it had a spider web on the cover? or maybe i never did. you should add “fuck that shit” as a choice, and i’ll pick that.

  2. Hahahaha… They ALL had spider webs on the cover, I swear.

  3. Yeah, apparently she left behind an unspecified number of “plots” which the VC Andrews heirs turned over to writers, but now they freely admit it’s just a cash cow/brand name. The copyright information on the newer books is odd looking, to say the least

  4. I read ALL of the Flowers in the Attic books and My Sweet Audrina (which freaked me out) when I was in 9th grade–a TEACHER loaned them to me (so inappropriate!!!), if you can believe that. I read Heaven as well but no more from that series. I chalk all of this up not to innate weirdness but rather to being a voracious reader with an appetite for the gothic (and anything that was in a series). I hope that’s all it is, anyway…

  5. I read a couple of the Flowers books and at least the first Heaven one too. But God, can you imagine recommending that dreck to a kid today? I wish I’d been able to read something like Harry Potter instead. (Dude, a teacher could SO get in trouble for recommending a book like that to kids nowadays. My calculus teacher, bless him, got me to read “Flatland” and then started loaning me his Michael Crichton collection. I liked “Jurassic Park”, but after about 50 pages of “Disclosure” I’m like, “I don’t think you should be lending this to me.” Hee!)
