My University newspaper has a new column where a priest answers questions about Catholicism. This week’s entries are about holy water and pornography. Interesting.

(I think he left out a very important argument in his porn answer. The biggest objection I have to it is simply that by consuming it, you’re contributing to an industry that thrives on the degradation of women. Whether it’s morally right or not, you’re putting dollars in the pockets of rich old men and ensuring that further generations of women are forced into the sex industry to support themselves. There, that’s my rant for the day.)

  1. Howie- I am happy to see a pro- woman stance come out here. But let me tell you this: I have many a feminist friend who are no “pro-sex worker”, meaning the laborers of the industry, may it be porn, stripping, hookin’, or otherwise. Instead of now turning against the sex industry, many women are pushing for it to be legalized, thus giving women more freedom, equal pay for equal work, etc. What say you?

  2. Actually that’s kinda the point I was trying to make. I don’t have any problems with the morality of either consuming it or producing it. I just have problems with the industry, and I feel it’s better not to support it until such things get straightened out. (Truth be told I’m still a little personally skeeved out by the idea of turning sex into a consumer product, but I’m not willing to dictate that everybody must feel that way.) It’s like that whole protest movement against sweatshops. It’s not that I have any problems with Nikes; it’s just that I don’t like the conditions under which they’re produced. I think our attitude towards the “sex industry” should be the same.
