Pumpkin

PumpkinsI stopped in at the David Jones Food Hall this morning to see if they had any Halloween supplies. And there they were! Actual orange pumpkins! I knew they had to be available somewhere, but I’ve never seen them for sale before. I enquired at the greengrocer area. “Are the orange pumpkins for sale, or are they just for decoration?” “They’re for sale!” the helpful attendant told me. And the price? Twenty-eight dollars. I nearly choked. That’s seven times what my Mom paid for one in Indiana this past week. *sigh* I guess my Obama-lantern will have to be green instead of orange.

Edited to add: I just saw them at Harris Farm at Broadway for $20. I must be going insane, because I’m actually considering it.

  1. We used to grow pumpkins in our backyard in Adelaide – made great pumpkin-and-chilli soup. Orange pumpkins in the US are for carving, but in Australia they’re for eating – so they’re much more expensive than the 15c/lb or so in the US!

  2. I just bought Meg one at Millers in LaGrange for a whopping….$3.49. I watched Isaiah this week end. He is such a doll. Crawling like crazy. Real close to walking.

    The pumpkin patch we took the kids to was charging $18 and up for the large orange ones. For white or green or any other variation of “normal,” the prices were outrageous. I bought two small ones for $15! And then felt cheated when I saw some at the grocery store for $3 apiece…

    Anyway, check out the link on my site to Pioneer Woman Cooks – she has a great recipe for pumpkin butter (and other various things you can do with pumpkin puree) that I tried and it was yummo. I also made spaghetti squash bread (basically zucchini bread, but with spaghetti squash – saves you the shredding!) and it was good, too!
