Friday Five:
I’ve been thinking about joining this meme (you answer five new questions every Friday), but I didn’t manage to get around to it til today. And since it’s still officially Friday in the U.S., I’m gonna go for it.
1. You’ve just won a complete collection of movies starring one actor – what actor would you pick? I’d like to say someone highbrow like Bette Davis or Peter O’Toole, but in reality, I’d probably pick Ewan McGregor or John Cusack. They’re always in good stuff. (Actually I think my sister HAS all the Cusacks already.)
2. What was the last movie you saw in a theater? The Man Who Wasn’t There. See my comments here.
3. What was the last video or DVD that you bought? I bought Snookums the complete James Bond DVD collection for Christmas. Of course, the shipping company screwed up and we didn’t get it til today, but he was still happy.
4. What movie could you watch over and over again and not get sick of? Probably Pride and Prejudice. I notice something new in it every time I see it. And I watch it every time I get sick or sad. It cheers me up.
5. How do you plan to spend your weekend? Today the Snook and I went to pick up his vids from the shipping company, and then we took a walk through Erskineville and had lunch in a cafe. Tonight we’re headed to the Nags Head Pub with the Snook’s friends to see Samson and Sharkey, an awesome duo that play cover songs. No plans for tomorrow yet, but I’m thinking “BEACH”. Sounds nice, doesn’t it?

I’m with you on Pride and Prejudice. I absolutely love that movie. It makes you feel all good inside. 😉

Yeah, but here’s the thing: I got the DVD when I was home in the States, and there’s about 10 minutes of stuff that I’ve NEVER SEEN BEFORE! Previously I only had a tape off the A&E version, so this must be the whole, unedited BBC version. Most of the scenes are just filler, but at least one is important to the story. You get a longer scene between Elizabeth and Wickham after he announces his engagement to Mary King, where they both basically say that they would’ve gotten married if he could’ve afforded it. Which kinda floored me. I never realized she liked him so much. Anyway, there’s not really anything new with Colin Firth, which is of course the real issue. But it’s worth getting, if you can. Especially for the “Making Of” documentary, where you get to see him in preparation for the famous “wet shirt” scene. 🙂

I read the book, and I thought that the movie stuck very close to it. Elizabeth really did like Wickham; he charmed her thoroughly. And Mmmmm… the “wet shirt” scene….. 😉 All this P&P talk makes me wanna run home and have a marathon! I plan on getting the DVD as soon as I can afford to; but I heard that there was some quality issues with it. Is this true? Some folks on Amazon complained that the picture was horrible, and that it wasn’t worth spending the $$ for the DVD. I’ll probably get it anyway, but I was just curious.

Huh! Maybe that was just a bad batch or something. I picked mine up at a Best Buy in L.A. and I haven’t had any problems with it. I’ve only been watching it on the computer, but I didn’t notice any picture issues. I’ll let you know what happens when I run it through the TV. (My old tape was crappy anyway, so pretty much anything is an improvement.)

Cool! Thanks, Kris.
I’ve been wanting to get the P&P DVD for so long, but because of the cost of the original DVD (they have a new, cheaper, Special Edition widescreen version out, the one that people have been complaining about the most), as well as the negative comments on Amazon.com, I’ve forced myself to wait. But we’ve officially put our VCR to rest; our DVD player now rules supreme in this house. That means if I wanna see P&P again anytime soon, I’ve gotta break down and get it on disc.
It’s been my favorite movie for a few years now. I’ve already run one of the 6 VHS tapes into the ground & had to have my Grandma make me a copy from her set.

Hmmm… I think the Special Edition is the one I have. It’s two discs in a box? Yeah, that’s the one. I say get one, but maybe get it from a store so it’ll be easier to return if you do get a bad one.

That makes sense. I’ll give Borders a call tomorrow and see if they have one in stock. If so, I’ll be sure to ask about their return policy…
