On behalf of all of Australia, thanks @starbuxman! Merry Christmas to you too! ๐Ÿ™‚ https://t.co/TjtlrncAip

@jesstelford Yay! Well done Dad ๐Ÿ™‚

This weekend found out about 2 more senior Aussie devs heading to jobs in the USA. Both community leaders in Sydney. Feels like SV has really decimated local industry this year.

I’m sympathetic to @mcannonbrookes and others who say we need more technical leaders here – clearly we do! But how can we keep the ones we already have when they keep getting lured away?

Is it confirmation bias? I feel like the numbers going to US are higher than ever this year. Have SV recruiters focused on Aussie market more than in the past?

That’s why yesterday’s discussion of training younger devs was especially depressing. How do we do that when so many seniors are departing for better opportunities overseas?

@groodt The cynic in me wonders if the current US government is leading to companies focusing more on immigration from countries where folks are less likely to have visa problems, racial targeting.

@groodt Can’t even spell Sydney correctly. ๐Ÿ˜‚

Anyway, that’s me being maudlin and depressed done. I don’t mean to make the leavers feel bad. I’m thrilled for you ; you deserve it! I just wish Oz tech industry could offer you those kinds of opportunities here.

@sundress To cheer myself up, I was trying to come up with a list of folks who’ve come back. It’s a short one, but you’re on it!

@mark_sabbatical @mcannonbrookes Did you get to the part where I said I was thrilled for you? ๐Ÿ˜‰ But seriously, you’re one of many. I’ve been watching it happen year. Just the double whammy of you and @aussielunix made me a little sad.

@kleeut I haven surveyed them, though it’s an interesting idea. I suspect lots of reasons. More $, big name companies, opportunity to learn

@kleeut I suspect it’s a long game. We need to give them a compelling reason to stay. Build companies solving big problems for the world. Lure the best people HERE.

@aussielunix @mark_sabbatical @mcannonbrookes I know. You’re going to do great things there! We’ll just miss you.

@damovisa Excellent! Where are you going? Great to see someone going the other direction!

RT @damovisa: @malcolmsheridan @web_goddess Why live anywhere else?

@GeoffreyHuntley Yep. Also heard of several folks being invited to mysterious “Hacker X” recruiting events. Suspect it’s the same.

@mathowie Still bitter too. ๐Ÿ˜•

@GeoffreyHuntley Effect on local Women in Tech groups is even worse. A senior Aussie woman going leaves a much bigger gap in community. I know of like 6 Oz women at Amazon alone. ๐Ÿ™

@crankymate @sundress You’re definitely on that list too mate!!

Related note: There was a guy recruiting at SydJS a few months back for a self-driving car company in the US. I said, why don’t you set up an office in Australia? Him: time zones are hard.

YOU CAN SOLVE SELF-DRIVING CARS BUT NOT REMOTE TEAMS? ๐Ÿ˜ค

@OffBeatMammal @damovisa Excellent! Welcome back!

Sweet home Chicago! https://t.co/qpT0HNYFAZ https://t.co/1vgDUxGETm

@heidihelfand “Willis Tower.” ๐Ÿ˜

@parisba We call them “cookie pants” in my house. ๐Ÿ˜‚

@joshduck You’re another one for my short but happy list of Returners! ๐Ÿ™‚

@JamesTechRec So as a recruiter for an Aussie company, what can you do? Is it dispiriting to hire juniors, train them up, and have them eventually leave for the US? I’d find that really frustrating. ๐Ÿ™

@chaitanyakuber @ExpediaEng Yes! Great example of a company making effort to have an eng office here rather than relying on folks to relocate. ๐Ÿ™‚

@Thriobologist @NickWilde1990 @Asher_Wolf @tomscott I want talking about anything to do with programming time zones though, merely some companies’ reluctance to have teams in different places.

RT @tinypang: @web_goddess There are just such limited tech opportunities in Australia if you’re not in a traditional engineering role or dโ€ฆ

Momofuku Banana Cream Pie. It tastes better than it looks! https://t.co/msN4sWQ2Qj https://t.co/n3b8M5srHB

@tcn33 WANT!

@KathyReid But you’re still here! I don’t have any objection to folks working for SV based companies. My goal is more folks physically staying in Australia, where they can continue to be part of the local community (as you are!).

@zarahjutz Hm. It doesn’t come up when I search the website…

@zarahjutz Wait! Duh. It hasn’t aired yet. ๐Ÿ™‚

@NickWilde1990 @Thriobologist @Asher_Wolf @tomscott Ahh! I suspected yours might be a joke, but then folks went down a time zone tangent and I got confused. ๐Ÿ˜‚ All good.
