This week we took delivery of the painting we recently bought (by Aussie artist Kate Nielsen) and had it hung in the living room. I caught up with multiple friends like Maria Shvedova and my old AWS Zürich colleague Ksenia Wahler. I started sewing a baby quilt top, and I sewed myself a pair of shorts in linen. I’ve also been working on an import of my entire Twitter history, more than 4300 days worth of tweets. More details on all this over on my blog… https://www.web-goddess.org

Happy birthday, Dad! I hope the day brings you roast beef sandwiches and beaver nuggets galore. 🩷

  • Comments

I had a lovely email from my friend Emily tonight, who said she appreciated and approved of my stance on moving away from Facebook and Instagram as platforms, but missed the ability to comment on my updates. It’s a fair point. I’ve deliberately left comments turned off for now, as Rodd is working on a project to turn this blog (and RoaldDahlFans) into a static site. This will make the site more secure; it’ll load faster for you; and it’ll be cheaper for me to run. The trade-off is that anything interactive – like comment forms – won’t work anymore. But I know what Emily means, and I miss having that form of interactivity here.

There is an interesting option that I’m toying with – using Bluesky and/or Mastodon for the comments. I’ve seen several static blogs doing this with those networks, and it feels like something I could do. I’ve started doing my research so it may well be appearing here before you know it…

Updated to add: You know what? Let’s try turning comments back on and see what happens…

  • Bailee Shorts in Linen

This weekend I made myself another pair of Bailee Shorts, this time in a beautiful stone washed linen I picked up at Tessuti a few weeks ago. I haven’t sewn with something with this much drape in a long time! I was nervous doing the cutting, because it felt like the fabric could easily move around beneath the pattern. The actual construction went smoothly though, and I love how they turned out. The style definitely looks better in this sort of fabric than in a stiffer cotton. Here I’ve paired it with the Arkie shirt in Liberty Tana Lawn I made a few months back.

  • Bulgogi Burritos

YUM. I haven’t made these in a while, but they’re so worth it! 🌯

I’ve caught the patchwork bug again. Getting these points to align is *hard*!

  • Apple Shortcut error checking

I’m almost ready to kick off the import of my Twitter archive to this blog, and in the process I figured out how to do error checking in an Apple Shortcut in a way that doesn’t disrupt the flow! I’ve gone back to my Instagram Shortcut and updated it and the accompanying blog post to explain.

Related note: I think maybe Apple Shortcut sharing actually does version snapshotting?! Because when I clicked the link in the post, it opened the old “pre error checking” version. I had to explicitly choose to Share again and it generated a new URL. Huh. That’s pretty cool.

    Kaya toast FTW

I found kaya at Coles Broadway this week and couldn’t resist. Now I just need the Snook to learn to make Kopi-C and I can have a proper Singaporean kaya toast breakfast!

Another AWS friend from Europe is in Sydney on vacation! My old colleague Ksenia from the Zürich office and her lovely family met up with us for pizza tonight. 🍕❤️

    Proteas with Garden View

We bought our first proper piece of art from a gallery! This is by Aussie artist Kate Nielsen, who I was lucky enough to meet a fortnight ago. I love the boldness of the colours and the brushstrokes, and how the oranges just pop off the canvas. 🍊🖼️ (And thanks to Louis at Nanda\Hobbs for guiding us through the process!)

Popping in for my weekly update. This week I learned to weave and finished a floor rug for the dining room! Rodd and I made another dessert from the CWA 1965 cookbook – “Coffee Velvet” – which resulted in a FAIL for me and a winning upgrade for him. I shared about the proposed giant hostel for Chippendale, sent my feedback to the City, and blasted it out to my networks. We also started our project to walk all 80km / 50mi from Manly Beach around Sydney Harbour to Bondi. And I spent several days migrating all my Instagram photos over to my blog so I can start the process of deleting my account over there, because the tech broligarchs can SUCK IT. Details on all this over at my blog! https://www.web-goddess.org
