  • How to Write a Better Weblog

“How to Write a Better Weblog.” I actually thought this article was fairly useful. I mean, as Michele points out, blogs are mainly personal sites and therefore no one should ever attempt to proscribe the way they’re to be written. But for a lot of us, what started out as a personal exercise has become something bigger. You find a “voice”. You worry whether the design of your site is sending the right message. You start to play up to the audience. (After all, if you didn’t acknowledge them at all, why are you posting this stuff on the Internet anyway?)

For me, this site started as a way to keep lots of family and friends updated on what I was doing far, far away. But nowadays, for better or worse, it’s become so much more than that. It’s partly my own talk show, where I get to lead the discussions that I want to lead. It’s partly a travelogue, where I get to show you guys some of the amazing stuff I’ve seen. It’s partially a diary, so I can remember the day I left Netdecisions or the day my new brother was born. There are so many reasons that we write, but at the core of every one is the idea that someone else is going to read it.

That’s why I found the article useful. Not because it tells you what to write about in your weblog, but because it emphasizes the importance of good writing for an audience. Sure, it’s not a law and you’re free to “rItE hOwEvHh U wAnT”, but think how much more impact your ideas and thoughts could have if you presented them more readably. Look at the A-listers that everyone links to. What do they have in common? Good writing. If you care at all about your audience (and whether you admit to it or not, you do), you should make sure that reading your site is a pleasure, not a chore.

  • Site outage

Apologies for the outage today. No clue what caused it.

  • BlogBack

Hey, looks like there’s another remotely-hosted weblog commenting system on the market. It’s called BlogBack and it seems a little more customizable than Reblogger. You might wanna give it a try. Or maybe you wanna just wait until I finally release my homegrown blogging system to the world. Now there’s something I could do to occupy my time…

  • CV

I’ve re-added my CV (that’s “résumé” to you Yanks) since I’m, you know, lookin’ for a job and all.

  • New Poll

That V.C. Andrews reference down below sent me on a total nostalgia trip. Did you ever read any of her books? Would you admit to it? Go vote and then read the rest of this post.

Okay, in case you’re wondering, V.C. Andrews wrote all these weird melodramatic serial novels generally about young women in incestuous circumstances. They were really popular in the 80’s, I swear. In junior high my group of girlfriends used to pass copies of them around until they were ragged. Apparently they’re such a publishing cash cow that even though the author died, her family have continued to publish new books under her name. They’ve all got lurid covers with a blond waif peeking out of a cutout on the front. No, I’m not proud of knowing this.

  • Polls

If you downloaded my Simple Poll System to try out at your own site, you should know that I just fixed a bug that cropped up when you tried to view the results before anyone had voted. Re-download the source files and just replace “pollresults.php” if you need to.

  • New Poll

In honor of my lunch today, a new poll has been started. Please take two seconds to give me your views on the gift from the gods that is hummus.

Results from the old poll: Well, apparently you guys didn’t notice much of a change in the site. By “new design”, I was referring to the now full-screen page width and the row of colored boxes down the left side of the page. As Snookums pointed out though, these aren’t big changes and only design-obsessed geeks like me would even notice. I was basically doing the cyber-equivalent of “Do you notice anything differently about me?”, and you guys were giving me the stammering boyfriend “Uh, no?” act. Point taken.

  • Meh.

Sorry about the lack of updates. The blog will remain on hiatus until there’s something interesting to report…

  • Korean Star Goddess

You know, I regularly come across disturbing search results in my website referrer logs, but it’s not very often that I come across one that’s complimentary. Today I found “korean star goddess”. And I’m the third result! I’m ranked above Korean-Babes.com!

  • Polls

In case you haven’t noticed, there’s a new poll over there in the left hand column. After you’re done voting, you might be interested in reading how I set it up. No database is required, and it’s a lot simpler than the comment system. (Which reminds me, huge apologies to those who wrote asking for assistance with the latter. I’ve been so busy moving hosts that I haven’t had much chance to really look at your e-mails. You’re my top priority though, I promise.) Oh, and in case you missed it, vote! 🙂
