  • His Dark Materials

Ooh, check out these photos from the set of the upcoming His Dark Materials movies. The gyptian barge looks good! I like the atmosphere they’ve got going too.

  • Serenity

Me: “Hey, he didn’t wear the hat!”
    Snook: “What hat?”
Me: “I don’t know. All these Firefly fans are knitting crazy yellow and orange hats with pompoms, and I think the big Jayne guy was supposed to wear one. But he didn’t.”

So, “Browncoats,” what was up with that? I loved the movie, by the way, and though I’m definitely a Joss Whedon fan, I never saw a single episode of the show. I guess that makes me one of those converts y’all were hoping to get with this movie! I did cry at the end, even though I didn’t have nearly the emotional connection you guys must have had. The Reavers scared the crap out of me. Jayne made me laugh. I kept waiting for River to kick some ass (and it was hugely satisfying when she did). Mal was suitably Han Soloish in a way nobody else has been since 1982. I just have a few (possibly spoilerish) questions for the fans…

    – Who was “Mr. Universe”? I got that he was some big hacker, but I didn’t get why he had such crazy powers and yet the Alliance hadn’t taken him down.

    – Was Inora a priestess, a hoochie, or both?

    – What happened at that battle of Serenity Whatever? I felt like it probably had thematic resonance with their last stand, but we of course missed out on it.

    – Hey, Catboy, what was the big moment where Mal did something that you thought was shockingly inhumane? Since his character was new to me, I just sorta took him at face level…

And yeah, yeah, we’re totally going to go rent the DVDs. I just thought maybe you could point me to a little primer since I’m very stoked about getting into it at the moment…

  • Superman filming?

How excitement! A customer just called to ask whether it was going to be difficult to get into the shop today, as apparently there’s a movie – Superman! – filming down York Street. I had no idea! I’m going to sneak down at lunch and see if I can get a photo.

Update: Here they are! The two crappiest photos ever. (I only had my mobile and I didn’t want to risk getting too close for fear that I’d get, like, busted or something. I don’t know. I was paranoid.) They’d set up a big crane at Wynyard Station, not far from Krispy Kreme. It was holding a big roof-like structure over the area by the bus stops beside the Menzies Hotel. There were hundreds of people milling around, sitting on the grass and standing at the fences watching. This first shot is from up top in the little park-like area, looking down towards where all the lights were. At one point I heard a voice over a loudspeaker call “Action!” and then I caught a glimpse of a crowd of people start walking around that street. And then “Cut.” Hollywood in action is pretty boring, to tell you the truth. The second shot is down on Wynyard Street looking at the big crane thing. I didn’t see anybody that looked very important, though there were two swanky big motorhomes parked down one of the side streets.

    Superman filming     Superman filming

Stupid anecdote: I was sorta disappointed not to see Lois Lane because I read in a magazine yesterday that she was going to be played by Mischa Barton from The O.C., and I had a crazy vision that maybe she’d be wearing yet another big ugly hat and I could yell something amusing at her. But then I got home and looked it up and it turns out that it isn’t her, it’s Kate Bosworth. Damn. That’s what I get for gleaning celebrity information from nine-month-old magazines at the doctor’s office.

  • Wonka Thoughts

Since Kevin asked, I just checked out the new Charlie the Chocolate Factory TV spot. Hmm. Okay, first the positives: They put back the squirrels! I’m really, really happy about that. I always thought the “geese-laying-golden-eggs” was stupid. And though the boat looked weird to me at first, the shot of it from above with all the Oompa-Loompas at the oars really reminded me of the original Joseph Schindelman illlustration. The bad: As Kevin said, Johnny Depp really does seem to be trying to channel a 13-year-old boy here. I don’t think that’s a good thing. We already had Gene Wilder as the literary-quote-spouting Wonka, and now we’ve got Depp as the let’s-boogie Wonka… neither of which seem very faithful to the book. I’m withholding final judgement til I can see the whole film together.

  • Wimbledon

Tonight I joined the Snook out at Westfield Bondi Junction (a big fancy-pants shopping mall) to see Wimbledon with the rest of his co-workers. Their boss had booked a Gold Class showing for us, which was pretty sweet. It’s basically a private theater – no more than 40 people – and everybody has big plush recliners to sit in. Unfortunately the concept of “open bar” and “two hour movie” don’t go so well together… I myself had to get up and wee twice during the film, and I hate missing the movie. Luckily I didn’t miss much, as this is a strictly formulaic rom-com. I never really bought into the love story at all, mostly because Kirsten Dunst annoyed the crap out of me. I guess I’m over her. Paul Bettany was great, though, and I found him really believable as a tennis player. The Snook and I also got a kick out seeing some shots of London and Brighton. (We also had fun speculating on how the tennis sequences were filmed; the IMDb trivia page confirms that the ball was CGed in afterwards.) So all in all, a fun evening… but way, WAY too many carbs. Ick.

  • Eternal Sunshine

Last night Snookums and I went out to see Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind with a friend. I don’t mean to sound like a wanker or anything, but I’m not sure I can say anything meaningful about it right now. It’s just too close. I really, really liked it. I found myself fighting back tears about halfway through. I absolutely loved the ending (though the idealistic part of me wanted it to end as soon as Joel woke up that last time, not wanting to see the messy yet realistic and ultimately uplifting ending). I’d also like to take this opportunity to thank (*eye roll*) the Snook for giggling and squeezing my hand when Joel said, “Constantly talking isn’t necessarily communicating.” Har har. He also thought it was pretty funny to lose me in the bathroom crowd afterwards so I’d get all weirded out. (And I did just have my hair dyed a funky color…)

  • Lemony Snicket preview

I knew they were making a Lemony Snicket movie, but I didn’t realize Jim Carrey was playing Count Olaf! Check out the trailer. It looks… interesting. I think he looks the part but I didn’t really imagine the Count being so goofy. In the books I read (the first four), he was very creepy and scary and menacing. That’s part of the reason I didn’t like them so much. I don’t like scary stories! But other than the goofiness, this looks like it good be a good film. I hope they keep the books’ warped sense of humor. And how funny is it that Jude Law is providing the voice of Lemony Snicket?! (Link courtesy of Kevin.)

  • The Movie Show moves to ABC…

Shock! Horror! The hosts of SBS’s Movie Show, David Stratton and Margaret Pomeranz, have defected to the ABC! To an Aussie, this is pretty much as big a deal as when Letterman jumped to CBS.

  • Harry Potter Casting News

Emma Thompson will play Sybil Trelawney, Harry’s dreaded Divinations teacher, in Prisoner of Azkaban. Cool. I kinda pictured Sybil as older, but I’m sure Emma will be able to pull it off. (Luckily Gilderoy’s not around in this one, huh?) Although, what’s this about the movie not coming out til next June? I thought we could expect it this year, same as the last two. Damn.

  • Japanese Story

Tonight I saw Japanese Story, a new Australian film starring Toni Collette. I’m not sure I can say anything meaningful about it without giving everything good away. As the director says, “Some people have just gone, like, you know, I don’t get it and I don’t even want to get it, you know? And then some people go, you know, thanks, I got it.” I think I fall somewhere in the middle. But sometimes it’s good, you know, to not “get” every single thing. I’m still thinking about it. I’d definitely recommend it.
