  • Sue Sylvester does Vogue

Sue Sylvester’s “Vogue”. AWESOME. I was surprised it wasn’t more tongue-in-cheek. Other than a couple references to “I hate Shuester” it was a pretty faithful reproduction! Kurt looks great in that tux and scarf.

  • SMH Star Trek Quiz

SMH Star Trek Quiz. I got 64%, which is nerdier than the general population but not a full-on Trekkie.

  • The Hollowmen

If you’re like me, every time you hear The Hollowmen credits start, you think, “What IS that song?!” Tonight the Snook tracked it down for me. It’s an 80’s band from New Zealand called The Bats and the song is “North by North.” There you go!

  • TWoP

Oh man. When did Television Without Pity change layouts again? It’s AWFUL. There are crazy huge images in your face everywhere, and you can’t see what reviews are new without scrolling down. They seem to have done away with the drop-down nav menus too, which means you can’t go straight to a show or forum anymore (artifially inflating pageviews). It sucks.

Oh, wait! I just discovered that you can go straight to shows and forums; they’re just hidden in a stupid huge javascript rollover menu. What was wrong with the old version? The rotting yet beloved corpse of Dawson’s Wrap must be spinning in its grave…

Five minutes later: Ahhhh. The founders left the site last month. That explains it. I went to Sars’s site to see if there was any word from her. Nothing but a link to a forum post that’s already since been erased. Wow, I’ve been reading that site for more than ten years and suddenly it’s just… gone. That sucks.

  • Bosco?

Dude, Mr T’s character on the A-Team was called Bosco Baracus?? I never knew that.

Edited 13/04/2025: Link is dead and not archived.

  • Idol Roundup

I don’t really have the energy to do a full recap, but here are my quick impressions from last night’s “Disco Fever” performances:

    • Chris: good as usual. Solid performer, but don’t think he’ll ever pull the teen vote.
    • Damien: Yowch. I wouldn’t say it was the worst thing ever, but I was definitely more bored than in any of his previous songs. Why didn’t he bust out the Bee Gees?
    • Lavina: again, good as usual. Again, don’t think she’ll ever pull the teen vote. And why does Holden have a vendetta against her? Is it because he’s still bitter about her weird-looking sister that he had such a crush on?
    • Ricky: We fast-forwarded. Boring! And crazy eyes. I think the judges want him gone. I do too.
    • Lisa: Great song choice, but really boring performance. We haven’t really seen her grow or change at all so far.
    • Dean: I said to the Snook before the show, “If he doesn’t do ‘Kung Fu Fighting’ and bust out some of his karate moves, he’s DEAD TO ME.” Well, he didn’t sing my song but he did do the gymnastics. Still not the greatest singer, but that was my favorite performance of his so far. Very entertaining!
    • Bobby: Superfreak? REALLY? My enthusiasm died a little bit when he started, and I realized that he was basically just doing the Richard Cheese lounge lizard version. It got better at the end when he started doing the “Bobby thing” though. The touchdown was unwarranted. (Last week’s “Under Pressure” was better.)
    • Jessica: I love her! So cute. She seems to be able to sing everything, and I’d love to see her go to the final two.

My Bottom Three predictions for the night are Damien, Lisa, and Ricky, with Ricky to thankfully go. Although there would be some Lisa backlash a-brewin’…

  • Carissa Explains It All

Awww, Carissa Gaghan – everyone’s favorite moppet Racer – is doing recaps of The Amazing Race this season. The really funny bit is that Eric and Jeremy are her favorite team. I guess when the sexual “innuendo” goes right over your head, they’re just cute, doofy guys. (And hey, Tricia, Bill Gaghan will be running the Boston Marathon with you!)

  • Amazing Race

I foresee a lot of whinging about the last episode of The Amazing Race, but I’m at peace with it, really.

Goodbye, Nerds. I’m really not sorry to see them go though. I never really warmed up to them. Yeah, it was great seeing nerds on TV, whatever, but they were just so stereotypical and non-threatening that I found their inclusion a little insulting. I wanted to see them kick ass. I wanted to see them use strategy and cleverness more than they did. (Which prompts me to comment that, in my opinion, Boston Rob was actually the nerdiest person to play the game. Whether or not you agreed with his strategy, he worked the mental side of the game more than any other player.) Which also reminds me, I don’t think that reading comic books and being good at puzzles makes you incapable of competing at something physically. (Says the girl who got up early this morning to go running with her very nerdy husband.) I resent the attitude that smart people can only excel at intellectual stuff and shouldn’t be expected to be able to kick a ball or win a footrace. That just annoyed me about them. We were just supposed to like them automatically because they wore glasses. Or maybe it’s because I’m a self-hating nerd. (Reminds me of when my parents finally got me a Cabbage Patch kid and she had glasses, which were presumably supposed to make me feel better about myself. Instead I just felt like a big nerd with a big nerd doll.)

I’m still liking the hippies, by the way. Yeah, the constant fake Italian accent is getting a little grating, but for the most part they’ve had fun the ENTIRE race. They don’t seem to get stressed and they’re not outwardly mean to anybody. They’re running the race I WISH Dave and Lori had run. And hey, Lake and Michelle are kind of amusing! I wouldn’t mind seeing them in the top three.

  • Sakai-san!

Toast and SakaiCheck it out! It’s Toast and Sakai! I know somebody who’s met an Iron Chef! (And if you came to our first Halloween party, you know him too! He was the proctologist.)

  • Serenity

Me: “Hey, he didn’t wear the hat!”
    Snook: “What hat?”
Me: “I don’t know. All these Firefly fans are knitting crazy yellow and orange hats with pompoms, and I think the big Jayne guy was supposed to wear one. But he didn’t.”

So, “Browncoats,” what was up with that? I loved the movie, by the way, and though I’m definitely a Joss Whedon fan, I never saw a single episode of the show. I guess that makes me one of those converts y’all were hoping to get with this movie! I did cry at the end, even though I didn’t have nearly the emotional connection you guys must have had. The Reavers scared the crap out of me. Jayne made me laugh. I kept waiting for River to kick some ass (and it was hugely satisfying when she did). Mal was suitably Han Soloish in a way nobody else has been since 1982. I just have a few (possibly spoilerish) questions for the fans…

    – Who was “Mr. Universe”? I got that he was some big hacker, but I didn’t get why he had such crazy powers and yet the Alliance hadn’t taken him down.

    – Was Inora a priestess, a hoochie, or both?

    – What happened at that battle of Serenity Whatever? I felt like it probably had thematic resonance with their last stand, but we of course missed out on it.

    – Hey, Catboy, what was the big moment where Mal did something that you thought was shockingly inhumane? Since his character was new to me, I just sorta took him at face level…

And yeah, yeah, we’re totally going to go rent the DVDs. I just thought maybe you could point me to a little primer since I’m very stoked about getting into it at the moment…
