Well, I couldn’t find the red lettuce, but I got everything else. The worst part was finding “napa cabbage,” which is a very long and leafy green Oriental cabbage. I was sure they had it in Chinatown, but the Chinese of course call it something different. Eventually I found an ancient little shopkeeper lady who was able to point it out to me. Sweet. So now the bulgogi’s in the fridge marinating and all the egg rolls are prepared and ready to fry. Being a domestic goddess is hard work.
In other exciting culinary news, I’m hosting a “Korean Feast” dinner party Monday night as a leaving-do for my friends Kel and BJ. (They’re both leaving London and heading back to the States. *sniff*) Tentatively on the menu: bulgogi (spicy beef), rice, red lettuce, and all the chicken and beef egg rolls the guests can eat. Which reminds me, I need to run to Chinatown for some more supplies. I’d better go while London is still enjoying its weekly quota of one hour of sunlight… 🙂
How excited am I to receive my first order of groceries purchased on the Internet today? VERY. I feel so futuristic. Tesco, don’t let me down!
Salon’s article about McDonald’s and mad cow disease really turned my stomach. For the past year and a half I’ve been congratulating myself on not giving in to paranoia and fear (I bought some hamburger just last night to make chili… yum!), but even I begin to crack when faced with phrases like “mechanically recovered meat.” Tell me again why I should be a vegetarian, Brigita?
No free taco. My dad will be disappointed.
My dad e-mailed me raving about some Taco Bell promotion to give everybody in the United States a free taco if Mir hits a target in the South Pacific. I figured he’d picked it up from some bogus e-mail forward. Turns out I was wrong. Now I wonder, how do they determine who’s eligible for this? Is it everybody physically located in the U.S.? What about tourists? What about illegal immigrants? In other words, how do I (theoretically, of course) get my taco??
How well do you know your chocolate? This site shows you cross-sections of various sweets and candy bars and asks you to identify what they are. Some are harder than you think. (And at least one goes by the British name, but if you can’t recognize that it’s really an M&M, you probably shouldn’t play anyway.)
Holy cow! There’s a new kind o’ Peeps! They look like little gingerbread people. But hey! Whatever happened to Scary Cats? I SWEAR they used to make orange cats for Halloween. Eileen licked one sophomore year and stuck it to our dorm room door. It stayed there until we chipped it off six months later.
