  • Soctopus Attacks Oscar, Film at 11

As you probably read elsewhere, the 2005 Oscar nominations were announced this morning and you all know what that means… The Third Annual web-goddess Oscar Contest has offically launched! This year the first prize is a one-of-a-kind, never-before-seen sock creation: the Soctopus! (Thanks to Christopher for suggesting the concept.) Second and third prizes are the ever-popular mini sock monkeys. Remember, do your research and take as much time as you need before you enter because you can’t go back and change your entry later! But don’t wait too late, because ties can be broken based on who put in their guess first… Good luck everyone!

Oh, and if you want to see more pictures of Soctopus in action, here are some shots of him attacking the Snook. (Matt used them to create the awesome promo image for the contest this year.) In terms of his construction, he’s a slight cheat since I actually used two pairs of socks. The skinny black tie was a joke reference to the modern tuxedos worn by guys like Brad Pitt, and the hat just seemed like the perfect accessory. Matt thinks it makes him look like a “ska-topus.” I can see that.

    Soctopus

    Eek!

    Ack!

    Squelch...

  • Oscar Sock Monkeys

    Oscar monkeysOscar Monkeys
I’ve finally managed to finish this year’s prize monkeys for the Oscar Contest. Pretty cute, huh? That’s 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place from left to right there. Please be patient, winners. I promise I’ll have them in the mail this weekend!

  • Not a single damn upset.

Shocking, isn’t it? But good on Peter Jackson and the LOTR crew for cleaning up. We ended up with a 13-way tie for first place consisting of: Adanma Onyedike, Carol LuBien, Carrie Murphy, Christen, Colin Bunnell, Denise, Emily, julie, Mark Schoppe, Mary Jo Brown, Mike, Pat, and Tim Reid. The tiebreaker, you’ll remember, consisted of guessing how many dead people would feature in the annual obituary tribute reel. The total was 30, which means that with a guess of 31, the winner is…

    *drum roll*

Christen! I don’t actually know him/her, but a sock monkey will soon be heading off to his new owner.

In second and third places were two people that guessed the same number (25), thus the double-tie was broken on the basis of who entered earlier. Therefore in second place is Mark Schoppe, and in third place is Carol LuBien. (Carrie Murphy missed out on third by a mere hour!)

And lastly, with the wooden spoon, is poor ramanan, who got zero correct. Better luck next year!

  • Contest is closed!

The contest is closed! Stay tuned for the winners.

  • Final call for Oscar Contest entries!

We’ve had over 400 entries this year. Holy crap. I’m going to close the voting when I get up in the morning, which should be about five hours before the show starts. So if you haven’t entered yet, do it NOW! A sock monkey hangs in the balance. (I’m going to do second and third prizes as well since there are so many entries.)

If you’d like to see how the tally is progressing throughout the show, bookmark this page. I’ll be updating the award winners in real time (well, as quickly as I can get them off the web) and the scores will update immediately. As you can see, there’s currently a 400-way tie for first. 🙂

Oh, and if you’re going to be taping the show (or watching it near a computer), I’d love it if you could e-mail me the number of dead people in the obituary tribute montage. I’ve had a couple of volunteers already but it never hurts to double-check!

    Good luck, everybody!

  • Oscar Contest volunteers needed

We have almost 300 entries! That’s incredible. Would any of you folks with TiVos be able to help me out with something? The time-delay on the show here is going to create some difficulty in scoring the contest. I’ll be able to get the results in real-time off the Web, but it’s the tiebreaker question I’m worried about. I won’t be able to count the dead people in the Obituary Montage until they broadcast the show here several hours later. Could a couple of you TiVo-ers count them and e-mail me the number? Otherwise I won’t be able to declare an immediate winner. Just leave a comment or e-mail me if you can help. Thanks!

  • Oscar controversy

The Oscar Contest now has almost 150 entries. Who are all you people? I really hope we don’t have a twenty-way tie. On a related note, there’s apparently some controversy about Fernando Meirelles’s nomination for directing City of God. Apparently another filmmaker named Katia Lund basically co-directed it but she’s gotten very little credit. It sucks that Meirelles has, like, no chance of winning, because that might be her only chance to get a mention.

  • web-goddess Oscar Contest 2004

It’s that time again! The Oscar nominees have been announced and the web-goddess Oscar Contest 2004 starts today. First prize is, of course, a sock monkey. (If you already have one of my sock monkeys, a doggie will instead be offered.) Current predictions can be seen here. Only one entry per person and you can’t make changes, so only enter once you’re really sure! But then again, entry date is the ultimate tiebreaker so you don’t want to put it off too long. Good luck!

Special thanks to my friend Mardi of soulcreative who designed the awesome logo for me. She’s a designer. You should hire her.

  • Final Oscar Contest Results

I didn’t bother working out the placings, because really there were only eight of them (from seven correct down to zero). Here’s a list of everyone who played and how many they got right. See you all next year!

  • Oscar the Sock Monkey

Oscar MonkeyMy Oscar Contest has officially stopped accepting new entries, so I figured I’d better show you all what you’re playing for. Meet Oscar the Sock Monkey! As you can see he’s all dressed up in black tie and silver sparkles. He’s got googly eyes and a big grin, and he’s even got his own little Academy Award!

As the response to the contest was about ten times what I was expecting – 144 entries? Who the heck are all you people? – I’m also providing regular sock monkeys for second and third place. The Awards start at 5:30 PM Pacific time Sunday, which means 12:30 PM Monday afternoon here. As I’ll be at work all day at the draconian, no-Internet unnamed printer company, you’ll have to wait til I get home for the results to be tallied. Basically, plan on the winner being named about five hours after the Awards start. Good luck everyone!
