My First Sweater

My SweaterMy First Sweater
It’s done! It’s slightly wonky and the fit is weird in places, but it’s wearable. (I think I’ll be able to block out some of the weirdness when I wash it. I should’ve done that first, but I was too excited to wear it.) The pattern is called “Sweet” and it’s from The Knitter’s Bible by Kate Buller. The wool is Jo Sharp DK 100% wool in “Plum”. The ruffle looks hard but – other than having to cast on 500 stitches – it was suprisingly easy to knit. The actual hardest part was sewing everything together at the end. I suck at that. The seams are a little bulky and non-symmetrical, which accounts for most of the fitting problems. I’m definitely going to knit my next sweater in the round so I don’t have to worry about that stuff. But it’s kinda cute, right?

(Edited to add: Yeah, ignore my glazed expression in the photo. It was 7:30 am and I’d overslept, so I’m a bit out of it.)

I remain in amazement at anyone who can craft something worthwhile with their own two hands, like you have done with your glorious sweater. And also, your lovely enthusiasim is contagious. Not that I’m going to knit or anything. But I’m going to do something.

  2. How cute! I think it looks great, Kris. I’ve been trying to knit, but I’m horribly uncoordinated with my hands. I mean, I’m great at typing and drawing, but I’m horrible when it comes to crafts, knitting, and crochet. Buh! 😉

  3. Awww, that’s so sweet Grandpa Joe! I’m glad to have inspired somebody. I had a crisis of faith with the sweater last week, where I was afraid to continue with it for fear of screwing up. I persevered though, and even though it’s not perfect I’m pretty proud of it.

  4. That’s gorgeous! I love the edging. I’m very impressed you made it in DK, I’ve never yet managed to knit myself anything in less than aran weight wool for fear of it taking me a gazillion years to finish.

Don’t worry about the seams too much, it’s absolutely impossible for anybody to sew knitting up straight and no one but you will ever notice (at least that’s what I tell myself!).

  5. You’ve done it. I’m home today (feeling sicky), it’s raining, I’ve made the obligatory trip to Walmart to buy NyQuil and dammit, I’m going to try to knit!! I have the stuff to start and I’m just jumping in. We’ll see…

  6. Hooray! I’m assimilating everyone. Don’t get frustrated. Once you get cast on, cast off, knit and purl, that’s seriously IT. You can do a lot with that. Other than a handful of increases and decreases, my whole sweater was done with just that basic stuff. Good luck!

  8. Fantastic! E-mail me a pic.
