I was telling a friend about my running program this past weekend and she suggested I consider entering the City to Surf this year. It’s a 14K course starting in the city and ending in Bondi Beach. Thousands of people do it, but a lot of them just walk. I’m thinking about it. It’s ambitious, to be sure, but I definitely wouldn’t expect to run the whole thing. It might just be good to have as a training goal so I don’t get complacent with my 5K runs. What do you guys think? It’s not til August so I’ve got a while…

Absolutely!
A) you’ve got plenty of time
B) having a new goal will be very motivating
C) the amazing feeling of accomplishment you’ll have at the end of those 14k
(And selfish point D) I can’t wait to hear about your training efforts when you do — I find reading your progress & efforts & others’ helpful comments inspiring to my own training!)
i think you should do it. but then you probably knew i’d say that, right :o). these sort of events tend to have a good atmosphere that really takes the edge off the monotony of exercise. participants! plus the sense of achievement at the finish line makes it all worthwhile.
You guys rock. I was so motivated I did 4.5 miles on the treadmill yesterday! That’s just over half the total distance and I managed it in under an hour. My legs also felt totally dead (too many carbs make me tired and bloaty), so I should be able to do even better next time.
I’ve also discovered a fairly big park with running paths not far from us, so I’m hoping to get in some outdoor work. It’s kinda hard this time of year though, since it’s getting dark by the time I get home at 5:30. I know, I know… I should get my ass outta bed and go in the morning. I may get to that point. For now, I think I’m going to keep using the gym for weekdays and work the park on the weekend.
Well, Kris, all I can say is ‘Who cares HOW you’re doing it – at least you’re doing it’ and discovering how great (in an oddly pleasant, mildly masochistic sort of way) it feels to see yourself improve… and all because you persevere π Go, Kris!
As for the 14k, easy – just behave as if you’re definitely preparing to run it, and decide whether or not to enter based on how things are for you nearer to the deadline. That way, you get in the training and health benefits whether or not you end up doing it. Downside is having to buy a new wardrobe when your things start to look baggy (been there!), but that experience can make for a pretty uplifting shopping spree π
I like your idea, Alastair. I’ll train like I am but not feel pressured if I don’t feel up to it. I should adopt that approach to more things in life. π
As for bagginess… everything I own is already baggy thanks to the Atkins. I’m twenty kilos down with about ten to go, so I’ve sworn not to go clothes shopping til I reach my goal. Luckily it’s finally winter again, so I can look like my comfy baggy layered look is intentional. π
And hey! You’ve got a blog! How did I miss that? I’ll be checking it out…
Is there a running partner you can drag along and keep you motivated? (or someone you can guilt into becoming a running partner..) π
I wish. I don’t really know anybody else around me that runs. This is what comes from only socializing with nerdy non-exercising types. π
you could try converting your non-exercising friends (in an encouraging, non-threatening way!). hey, it worked for me!
or see if there’s a running club in your area — and meet new people! And don’t be put off by the word “running” in the name — most clubs have (and welcome) runners/joggers of all speeds…
I’m working on the conversion thing. Kevin (the guy I ride to work with) has promised to give it a try… as soon as he managed to quit smoking. π
