I got new glasses.
I was at the optometrist last week to get new contacts when I suddenly realized that I’ve been wearing the same pair of glasses for over five years. I also made the stunning realization that I’ve never owned a pair of glasses that my Mother didn’t pick out for me. “Self,” I said, “it’s time to remedy this.” So I picked out some new glasses. You’re all going to hate them; Snookums did at first. They’re a little bit retro, a little bit funky, a little bit Clark Kent. Look, I have bad eyes and my lenses are thick. There’s no point in sticking with wire frames as if I’m going to disguise the fact that I’m wearing specs. I’d rather have a fashionable – yet “out there” – pair that I’m not ashamed to wear outside the house. So…
Whaddaya think? I know; it’s a big change. When I look in the mirror I get the same sort of feeling of unfamiliarity that I had when the Snook shaved off his beard. I’m also fighting through that “new glasses = tons of nausea” effect that I’d forgotten about, so that may explain my wonky expression. But I like ’em. (Don’t worry, Sis; I’ll wear my contacts for the wedding.)

don’t take this the wrong way, but Lovey bought a pair just like that to use the week before he had LASIK. He had a little problem with the “wonkiness” as well…. if he looked to the side at all, he would get “motion sickness” from the difference in clarity. I love those glasses… they match you, whatever that means. =)

(I think this is my first comment here!) I think they’re fabulous & they look great on you. I have been a fan of the chunky black frame for a long, long time. In fact, I recently bought another pair — vintage, horn-rimmed, Buddy Holly frames. True love!

Aww, thanks everybody! (And welcome, Steph!) I’m going to try wearing them for at least part of the day at work to get used to them. It’s funny, my optometrist warned me that people going to a smaller frame often say they feel “claustrophobic.” I totally understand that now. It literally feels like the world has closed in on me a little bit. (And there’s a big black line between the clear part and the blurry part.)

GORGEOUS. They’re awesome, Kris–I just picked out “funky” frames for my new pair of glasses, too. I’ve been a thin/wire rim guy until now. They don’t come in until next week, and I’m already nervous about what people will think. You give me hope–if mine look half as good on me as yours do on you, I’ll be happy.

They’re cool–very Lisa Lobe. If the wonkiness doesn’t wear off, go back to the eye doctor. I went through that for about a week before I went back only to find out they had inadvertantly switched the prescriptions–giving me the left for right and right for left. PHEW!

No, this is just the normal adjustment stuff, I think. There’s a fairly pronounced difference in my prescriptions – 6.25 for right, 8.75 in the left – so I’d know if they were backwards. I’ve switched up my contacts before and it’s like going into the funhouse. 🙂 But the dizziness is already getting better. Now it’s just out at the sides where the thickness increases. I’ve been wearing glasses for twenty years so my eyes are pretty good at learning what visual information to discard.

i wish i had the confidence and the bank balance to go all cool like that! glasses/frames should be updated at least every 5 years i say … better make an appointment with my optometrist! the glasses look awesome!

Yeah… the bank balance issue turned out to be a little bigger than I expected. I could’ve bought another digital camera for the amount I spent on these! Slightly less than half was frames, the rest was for my lenses. I have to say though, lens technology has really increased in the past five years. These are my thinnest, lightest glasses EVER.

I think we are psychically linked through the glasses, Kris–not only are mine of a similar style, but I also ended up laying out a little more cash than I planned (when did PLASTIC get so expensive?). I get a pretty substantial discount because I’m in the teacher union (hooray organized labor!), but I was at the “Fifty dollars and under” frame section for about two seconds before I headed over to the “You’ll pay for this hipness” area. 🙂
When mine come in I’ll definitely put up a picture immediately so we can compare.

Very nice, Mary-Helen! I think the wonkiness of mine is finally wearing off. I talked to my optometrist about it Thursday and she said that my right lens did slightly change prescription, plus they’re such a different shape from my old ones that it’d take a while to adjust.
