Friendship-Enders

Matthew Baldwin (of Defective Yeti) often posts board game reviews, and today he posted a list of games he calls “Friendship-Enders”. I can’t believe he didn’t include Monopoly! I have played Monopoly with the Snook exactly once, and I never will again. Let’s just say SOME PEOPLE take it way, way too seriously. (“Don’t you understand? The red properties are the KEY TO THE GAME! I’ve read articles where statisticians have worked this out! If you sell him that property, that Scottish bastard will WIN and I’ll NEVER TALK TO YOU AGAIN.”)

  1. Almost all my school friends refuse to play with me, because I play to win. But I thought the Orange ones were the key…

  2. Yeah, this was a number of years ago. I think new research agrees with you that the Orange are best. But he’s still irrationally defensive about the red ones.

  3. My ex-wife and my brother got in a very memorable Monopoly fight once. I don’t really want to go into it, suffice to say that my betrothed was clearly in the wrong and she never, ever, forgave me for taking my brother’s side. (It involved “House Rules” which were explained to all at the beginning of the game.)

In the first episode of the last Sopranos season, Tony and Bobby went to blows over a Monopoly game. I totally related.
