“Makeup Makes Women Appear More Competent, Study Finds.” Well, shit. Seriously? Sure, I break out the Wonder Woman lippie every now and then for fun, but you’re telling me that people make snap judgements that someone who wears makeup is better at her job than someone who doesn’t? That sucks! I don’t want to have to spend 20 minutes a day getting made up.

It takes me 5ish minutes to put on foundation, powder, eyeliner, mascara, eyeshadow and lippie in the morning (I don’t need blush – my natural “glow” is plenty). I can’t imagine taking 20 minutes over it. Makeup is my professional mask. I don’t wear it on the weekends, only to work. I don’t know if people think I’m more professional because of it though.

But then you’ve got to take it off at night. And if you go to the gym in the middle of the day, throw in another removal and application. Plus the shit is expensive. I just think it’s unfair to expect that of women. Yes, neat and groomed and professionally dressed; I expect that of everybody in an office environment. But the expectation that women should paint their face in order to be taken seriously (when men don’t have to) just strikes me as something terribly outdated.

I wonder if men would be taken more serious in a study like this if they were given subtle enough makeup that the average person couldn’t tell.
I’m going to say yes.

I agree Kris. Sauce for the goose, and all that. I’ve never worn makeup, and I have no idea if people judge me for that. Come to think of it, no-one in my office wears makeup. I guess I’m just lucky where I work.

I can’t comment on if people think you’re more professional if you wear it or not, but as you know, I loves me some makeup. I also know that not everyone does, nor did everyone I worked with before becoming a SAHM.
These days, I just don’t have the time to sit and pretty-fy myself like I used to. But I do have time to put on tinted moisturiser and some lip balm, which takes all of 15 seconds, and if I have another 15, I may throw on some mascara and blush. But then, I like makeup. 😀
