I’ve been doing some reading on Irish Travellers, the group that the Indiana child-beater mom belongs to. I suddenly remembered that they’d actually been through our part of the state (the northeast) before. Back in high school when I was working at the local grocery store, we got a fax through from some of the other IGA branches warning us to watch out for a group of “gypsies”. Apparently they would swarm the store in a big group and distract all the employees while someone raided the safe in the office. I remember being pretty fascinated with the concept at the time. Not the scam, but the idea that there were actual nomads living in Indiana. They never hit our store though.

Ya should see the news, they are REALLY all over this here. Havent seen this much coverage on one thing since O.J. The video shows her smacking the little girl around pretty good but the worst part is when it looks like she repeatedly punches her about 7 or 8 times. I thought it was rather weird that her hair is blonde in the video but when she turned herself in (a week later and after flying to Maryland) that it was a really dark brown. Of course she has been on the news saying that she has already been punished enough because they put her daughter in a foster home for the time being. The S.B. Tribune had a quote from her attorney that basically said that with the video evidence they were just going to throw themselves on the mercy of the courts, its going to be interesting to see what happens. Betcha she dosent get off with a slap on the wrist thats for sure.

I can imagine it’s everywhere there, since it made the Sydney Morning Herald here. (Although when I talked to Amy last weekend, she had to hear about it from Grampa Harter.) I wonder how hard it will be to find an impartial jury…
