I had a bit of a reading marathon today and managed to finish Kushiel’s Dart. Huh. I think we’ll have lots to discuss. How’s everybody else doing? I know this is a busy time of year, so if folks haven’t had a chance to pick it up (but still want to) let me know and we’ll just postpone the discussion a bit. If you’re still on the fence, just let me warn (or is it persuade?) you again that this is a very “sexy” book and you should be pretty open-minded before tackling it. There aren’t any really graphic sex descriptions; it’s more just the idea of what Phédre is and how her world works. (Personally, I’d have preferred more scenes of nookie with my favorite character – and less with, oh, say everybody else – but that’s jumping ahead to the discussion and that’s very naughty.) Just so you know.

  1. Ready when y’all are!

  2. Was it just me, or does Joscelyn sound HOT? is he who you’re talkin’ about, kris?

  3. Yeah, baby! 🙂

    But we should wait til everybody else is done or we’ll ruin it for them…

  4. ::grin::

    You can’t really avoid “everybody else”, though…it comes with her profession. 😀 Anyway, Kushiel’s Chosen (if anyone’s inclined to read the sequel) has a totally different tone. Enjoy book one while you can.

  5. Ooh, is it not as good? I was planning to look for it when I’m next at the bookstore. How different is it?

  6. It’s just as good. It’s just different. It’s like milk chocolate versus dark chocolate… sometimes, you just can’t choose… and you really can’t prefer one over the other necessarily… they’re just different. KC has a very differnet focus… and personally I enjoyed the progression. The nice thing is that KC is not just a rehast of KD, which would be annoying and trite. Phedre grows throughout KD and continues to grow in KC… as do other characters… Carey explores new arenas and ideas in KD. Everyone I know who enjoyed KC also enjoyed KD. Degrees and preference differ by person.

  7. I LOVED Kushiel’s Chosen, almost more so than Kushiel’s Dart, and I loved the latter a great deal. Chosen is larger in scope, as far as adventure is concerned, yet perhaps more predictable because by the time you finish Dart, you’ve already been well introduced to all of Ysandre’s enemies. A lot of what happens in Chosen is almost MORE heart wrenching than Dart, because you’re invested more emotionally in the characters, not to mention that the characters mean a great deal to each other. But I’ll say no more. I don’t want to give anything away. Chosen is wicked good fun.

  8. Marion – somehow your comments always get post-dated. That’s so weird. I have no idea why that is.

  9. ummm the cookie option maybe? I dunno anything about computers… do i “save message as a cookie” or not? *shrugs*

  10. Naw, cookie shouldn’t have anything to do with it. The server sets the time for the comment, and for some reason the server goes all screwy when you comment. Must have a crush on you or something. 🙂

  11. I have been a fan of Dart and Chosen for a long time. Both of these books are on my all time favorites list. I won’t say any more until the discussion really starts.

    What does the cookie option do?

  12. Hi Lori! Glad to you have you aboard. I think we’ll be starting soon, as I think everybody who wanted/had time to read it is finished.

    As for the cookie, it just saves your name and e-mail and website so you don’t have to type them in every time you comment. It should happen by default. The “Re-save cookie” option is if you change something and want the cookie to be re-saved to reflect that.

  13. hrm… so Thanksgiving is coming up for us americans… ^_^

    Are we going to start soon? Not that there’s a rush or anything… I’m just curious…

  14. Your wish is my command!
