Radar Map of SydneyThis is so weird. The power has been flickering for the past couple hours and it keeps knocking out our computers. I wonder if we’re having “brown-outs” from all the air conditioners running in this heat.

Later: Holy crap. It isn’t the heat; it’s all the fires. Snookums just pointed out that you can see them on the weather radar map. (I’ve archived a shot here.) That ain’t rain; there isn’t a cloud in the sky. All those blue dots – including the two huge ones – are smoke.

  1. holy crap, that’s scary.

  2. hope you’re doing well in your area – i’ve been have ‘brown outs’ all through the house since about 2 this afternoon. it’s hot and it’s scary outside 🙁 fires so close you can see them!

  3. Ooh, hope everything’s okay your way, Tracey. I live in Newtown, so we’re fairly protected. No bush anywhere around here. I wouldn’t have even known about today’s fires if it hadn’t been for the power problems. It seems to be fixed now though, so maybe they’ve got that under control. It’s just weird to see the weekly weather forecast show sun every day – a situation I would’ve loved at home in the US – and to feel bad because of all the damage (drought, fire) it’s doing.

(Don’t worry, Mom. If Sydney were Chicago, I live in Wrigleyville. In other words, there’s a hell of a lot of city to burn up before it gets to us.)

  4. I spoke to Smithers yesterday when they said on the radio that where he works had to be evacuated due to power failures and smoke. He told me that a power station was currently in the process of exploding when I called him and transformers and stuff were being blown something like 200m across the paddock.

  5. Whoa! I read something about that on one of the news sites, but I didn’t see anything about it on the TV news last night. Would that really cause power weirdness all over the city?

  6. i just went up to the local car park and on the 6th floor and .. it’s just extremely bad out there today again. You’re lucky to be in Newtown!

  7. Those are awesome pictures, Tracey. I’m going to post a link to them, if you don’t mind.

  8. i don’t mind one bit, post post!

  9. Funky Fried Ferret

If I was one sick puppy then I’d probably say something like, “throw a snag on for us, I’ll be over in a jiffy!”

I’m a funkalicious ferret so I won’t be saying that.
