World’s Best Litter System

AskMetaFilter tackles the issue of the best cat litter system. The Snook’s actually become rather disillusioned with our LitterMaid. He thinks the tines don’t go down far enough and thus you get a layer of stinky wee-soaked litter on the bottom. My issue with it is just that it’s huge and she tracks litter everywhere. I’d like to reclaim our guest bathroom! Something like this might be the way to go. It’s just that we’ve got so much invested in the damn LitterMaid – did I mentioned we lugged that thing back to Australia from Indiana? – that I can’t bear to part with it. I wonder if I cleaned it up, would anybody buy one second-hand?

  1. Maybe potty training the cat is the real way to go.

I recommend covered ones with a good mat. My cat uses the one from litterwelcomemat.com It collects the litter that gets kicked out and you just dump it out. She’s had hers for years.

Do you have anywhere else for her box? Our current setup (box and mat) takes up about 1.5′ x 2.5′ in the corner of the office. We have a little filter (that pulls air from the bottom) over the vent on her box and no one ever knows we have a cat.

  2. Hmmm. The office is an interesting option. Ours is in perpetual disarray so there’s really no floorspace to spare at the moment, but we could probably clean it up. We got in the habit of closing the door at night and when we’re at work out of fear she’d chew the computer cables, but she’s never really done that so we’re probably safe.

Mostly I’m just reluctant about the privacy issue, though. I don’t wanna be sitting at my desk surfing the Net while the cat’s beside me having a crap! That said, I don’t think she actually cares. She tries to hop in the LitterMaid while I’m actually cleaning it out so evidently she’s got no such hangups…

  3. You could do away with kitty litter all together if you used the Litter Kwitter (http://www.litterkwitter.com/ invented last year by an Aussie) to train the cat to use the toilet. You can buy them in Kmart for $99. That’s what I was going to do, but the landlord wouldn’t let me get a cat…

  4. Oh neat! The Snook has joked about teaching her to use the toilet for some time. I’ll be on the lookout for that…
