Clinique

Someone on AskMetaFilter wonders: Why do you wear makeup? Well, I don’t normally wear makeup, but I do today! I just had my free little makeover at Clinique. Here the results. I don’t know if you can see very much in that picture, but I took a poll amongst everybody at work (and at tonight’s Stitch and Bitch) and the results were overwhelmingly positive. I think the only real problem I have with it is the SHININESS. The blush and the lipstick are a little over-the-top for me (and the Snook agrees). I really like the eyes though, and as much as it annoys me to say it, I think I may have to start wearing mascara. It just really brings out my eyes and makes me seem more alert (and less tired). I still just feel weird about the concept of me wearing makeup though. People in that MetaFilter thread said it makes them feel polished and sophisticated, but I always feel like a little girl playing dress-up. Is that just a case of not being used to it? I just feel really silly and obvious, like other people will look at me and think that I’m trying too hard or something. (Plus there’s the whole “men aren’t expected to wear crap on their faces” feminist argument that I still partially identify with.) Ucccchhh, I dunno. I gotta go wash my face so I can feel like myself again.

I did manage to escape without buying anything though, which was a victory. Maybe I’ll try it again at a different counter and see if they do it differently. Any suggestions?

  1. Your mouth looks really pretty. It’s a nice, pretty shape, but I can’t tell if it’s just the face you’re making or the makeup.

  2. I don’t think you look shiny at all, although your deskcam might just have a flattering mattifying effect. 🙂 I’ll echo Brittanie’s sentiment that your mouth looks really nice and the overall effect is very soft and pretty.

Me, I don’t wear much makeup at all (I also feel obvious and overly done when I do), usually opting for a tinted moisturizer w/SPF, some mascara, and a little lipgloss (more for moisture than color–I’m addicted to the DuWop tingle!). Mascara is totally key for looking a little more put together and a lot more awake and it doesn’t take a lot of effort or skill to use, not to mention the fact that Great Last by Maybelline that all makeup artists supposedly swear by is dirt cheap.

You look great, lady! Don’t wash it off just yet. 🙂

  3. I think your lips looks very kissable 🙂

  4. I wear makeup as warpaint to work, but generally not on the weekends. I do like playing with it though – it was my obsession before wool…. I like your look. Mascara works well with pale skin and hair.

Recs for other counters? Try MAC for sheer variety. Also, find a makeup person who looks like you want to (in terms of makeup application) – they’re more likely to give you a result you’re happy with. Enjoy it!

  5. Watch it, Jussi! I don’t need a stalker! 🙂

  6. I feel the same way when I wear makeup, like a kid playing dress up. But I’ve never worn much, so I’ve always attributed it to my lack of practice. I do wear a little foundation most days to even out my color, plus mascara when I want to look polished. And tinted lipgloss always. For me that’s more to keep me from chewing my lips, though. Blush is the one thing that makes me feel the most overdone; I think I have enough natural color that I can get by without though. I toy with eye shadows and real lipsticks for special occasions.

I’ve heard fabulous things about MAC, though I’ve not spent any time at their counter.
