Wii Critique

This critique of the Wii by a “serious gamer” really annoyed me. He’s worried because he doesn’t think the popular Wii games are as serious or immersive as games for other platforms, and the market will become flooded with low-quality knockoffs. And you know what? He can BITE ME. He sounds exactly like the people the decry Harry Potter as poor literature. They’d rather people didn’t read/play at all, if they’re not going to read/play something deemed acceptable. I also resent the implication that the only reason I prefer Wii Tennis to Gears of War is because I’m too stupid to appreciate the latter. Maybe I don’t play games to have long, immersive experiences. Maybe I just want to relax and have a good time. Is that somehow cheapening the experience of hardcore gamers? Pffft. Whatever. The gaming industry has been stagnant for far too long, and I’m happy that there are finally games that I’m interested in playing.

  1. It’s hilarious.

Hardcore gamer brother of hardcore game designer: Waaa. The games I like to
play cost a lot of money to make and aren’t selling very well so the games
companies aren’t going to make as many of them so I won’t have new toys to
play with and my brother will be out of a job.

People buying and playing lots of games: STFU and L2P Wii Sports, n00b

Except, of course, that he argument is totally bogus. He talks about the
software portfolios becoming zero-sum. Why would they? The purpose of big
businesses is to make as much money as possible, not the same amount of
money as they did before. If the console games industry was worth billions
of dollars before the Wii, then those same billions of dollars will probably
still be there for hard-core games and expensive high-performance consoles.
There’s just going to be extra people and extra money.

It’s nothing like McDonalds coming in and putting milk bars out and
independent burger joints business. It’s the market share myth again.

The iPod didn’t kill the existing music players. The non-iPod market share
is tiny, but the actual number of non-iPod units shipped has still grown
since iPod came out. Same goes for the Windows PC killing the Mac. Market
share of Mac is poor, but Apple still sell more Macs each year than they did
    in the year before.

  2. Please note: The Snook sent that to me in an e-mail, and I have reposted it as a comment for him. (SINCE HE STILL REFRAINS, FOR SOME CRAZY REASON.)

  3. Harry Potter IS a poor literature. But that Wii thing, you are right, I just want to relax and have a good time with my friends and beer and Wii and….
And sometimes just Wii and me, is that wrong?

  4. Have you seen the new boogie game? you can dance and sing to it! How exciting! I’m playing Eledees at the moment… that involves shooting does that count?

Oh and i found out that High School Musical Wii game apparently comes with a MIC! for you to sing along!

  5. ZOMG! The Snook posted (sort of) ..hehe.

  6. He actually did post on my birthday, which rocked. 🙂
