Attention, my fellow American-Australians! The David Jones Food Hall in Sydney currently has a massive display of Libby’s canned Pumpkin Pie Mix. Pumpkin Pie Mix! In Australia! I literally GASPED when I saw it today. And then I gasped again when the woman at the checkout charged me NINE DOLLARS for it.

What the hell is a ‘superfood?’ No wonder people are confused about nutrition!
What does this have in it (apart from pumpkin)?

According to Wikipedia, a superfood is a “type of food that is believed to have more significant health benefits than any other type of food due to their specific phytonutrient content.” They list a bunch of superfoods, like blueberries and walnuts and spinach. Stuff with antioxidants and vitamin C. Libby’s are using it because of the pumpkin. I mean, for some reason in America eating pumpkin (or squash) by itself isn’t nearly as popular as it is in other countries. We carve ’em for Halloween and we make pies out of them in the fall. So I think it’s just a marketing buzzword to reassure Moms that making a pumpkin pie does, indeed, impart some health benefits.
The only thing it other than pumpkin is basically sugar and spice. It’s lovely though…

I should get my Mum some of that for Thanksgiving. She’ll probably go almost as crazy with glee as when I procured two enormous jars of Welch’s grape jelly for her from a visiting Yank friend.
