I scored a US$1 coin out of a vending machine in San Francisco in August. I didn’t even know they existed.

They do, but they’re mostly purchased by collectors or, as you say, used in vending machines that accept larger bills. They’re not very common. (Have you ever seen a $2 bill? They’re even rarer.)

I think my dad has a $2 bill somewhere – he used to collect money from all the countries he’s been to. I’ve never actually gotten one as change or anything though.
